The Eight Types of Tissues and Their Specific Uses: Why Mixing Them Can Be Harmful
There are eight main types of tissues, each with its own specific use. Mixing them up can actually cause some harm. Today, I’ll walk you through the different categories of tissues and their respective purposes. Don’t underestimate them—take a look and make sure your home is using the right type!
1. Facial Tissues
Facial tissues are the most frequently used type of tissue in my home. Why? Simply because they are convenient. They are mostly placed on coffee tables or dining tables to wipe hands or mouths, and occasionally to clean tables. When buying them, I pay close attention to the material. The ingredients are usually listed on the packaging, and many low-quality tissues only mention “wood pulp,” which could possibly be recycled materials or mixed scraps. I prefer to check if it says “100% virgin wood pulp,” which guarantees that it’s a safer option for wiping hands and mouths.2. Toilet Paper
Toilet paper needs no introduction—it’s primarily used as toilet tissue and is more affordable than facial tissues. It comes in both “with core” and “without core” varieties. The “with core” option has a hollow cardboard tube in the middle, making it easier to store and use, while the “without core” version is usually cheaper. However, many types of toilet paper differ from the national standards for facial tissues, and they tend to have higher bacterial counts. While it’s fine for cleaning hands and other parts of the body, I personally wouldn’t recommend using it to wipe your mouth.3. Napkins
Napkins are commonly used in restaurants and hotels. There are both standard paper napkins and higher-end linen-like napkins. Compared to facial tissues, napkins are of better quality, larger, and thicker. They have better absorbency and durability, and come in various colors and patterns, which can elevate the dining experience. Napkins used specifically for meals are subject to higher hygiene standards, so they are safe to use around food and on skin.4. Kitchen Paper
Kitchen paper is perhaps the tissue with the highest hygiene standards. I usually use it to clean kitchenware and cookware, as it has excellent absorbency and is less likely to tear. It’s definitely one of the most useful types of tissue. However, many people, for convenience, tear off a sheet to wipe their mouth or hands. I strongly advise against this—it’s too rough for the skin and can cause friction damage over time. It’s better to use facial tissues for that purpose.5. Wet Wipes
Wet wipes are more of a nonwoven fabric than a typical tissue. They are extremely convenient for wiping down surfaces or cleaning hands while outdoors. However, I would advise against buying cheap or unbranded wet wipes, as their hygiene standards can be questionable. Many disinfecting wipes contain antibacterial agents, which can be harmful to your mouth or face. After using wet wipes on your hands, be sure to wash them before touching food.6. Kitchen Wet Wipes
Now, let’s talk about kitchen wet wipes, which should primarily be used for cleaning oil stains, stubborn dirt, and utensils. They are not suitable for cleaning dishes or skin. These wipes often contain surfactants to dissolve grease, and using them on food or skin is not recommended. If you use them for cleaning the kitchen, it’s best to wear disposable gloves.7. Water-Activated Facial Wipes
Water-activated facial wipes are essentially upgraded regular tissue. Unlike ordinary tissues that dissolve when wet, these have much more durability, although they are still weaker than facial towels. I typically use them as emergency facial wipes when I’m out and about. There are many types available, and I recommend choosing unscented ones, as those with fragrance tend to contain artificial chemicals that might irritate your skin.8. Cotton Soft Towels
Finally, cotton soft towels, also known as facial towels, are made from nonwoven fabric and are super convenient. They are more hygienic than regular towels and softer than paper tissues. The only downside is that they are a bit more expensive. However, the main thing to remember is not to flush them down the toilet, as they can cause blockages. Don’t ask me how I know this…Conclusion
Tissues, a common household item, can be categorized into the eight types listed above, each with its specific function. Make sure you’re using the right type in your home. Thanks for reading patiently!
